I SCISSOR my knees open and close as I do my pregame warm-ups, otherwise known as Puck Bunny hour. Not to be confused with my Bunny. She’s nothing like those bed hoppers.

I feel a very large presence slide up beside me and look over to see Kayce Bicknelle, our center and team nice guy.

“What’s up, Santos? Did you know Jordan’s sister is out in the stands?”

I look over my shoulder in shock, following his eye line, and see Jolie standing at the glass, a smile on her face and my jersey on her back.

“What’s she doing here?” I ask, moreso to myself, but loud enough for Kayce to hear.

“I thought you knew considering you two are together, and everything.”

I look over at him and he stares at me with a knowing smirk, daring me to deny what he already knows. I sigh and let my head hang between my shoulders.

“How’d you know?” I push up to my knees and see him with a smug smile.

Kayce reaches out to help me to my feet and crosses his arms over his chest. “Seriously? I mean, I knew you two had a thing the minute I saw you go ballistic and practically tear the arena down when that fan got handsy.”

We start a new round of stretches, facing one another so we can continue our conversation.

“We’ve known each other since we were kids and when she returned home, the feelings that I managed to push down for the last few years came bubbling right up to the surface. She smiled and it was like love at first sight. You know?”

He watches me with a curious but understanding look on his face. “Yeah. I think I do know. So what does Jordan have to say about it?”

I blow out a breath and explain. “Jo kind of gave me a warning years ago that I wasn’t good enough for her and to stay away.”

“Ouch.”

“Yeah. Ouch.” My eyes wander over to where Jolie stands and she smiles when our eyes connect.

“So then I guess it didn’t go over well?”

“He was pissed at first, but then he confessed that the only reason he told me to stay away was because he thought Jolie and I would run off with each other and leave him behind.” Kayce snorts and shakes his head. “Fucking ridiculous, right? Anyway, we talked, he finally got it, then laid down some rules about PDA in the house when he’s around.”

Kayce lays one of his giant paws on my padded shoulder and gives me a shake. “You’ve got it bad”

We start making our way over to the bench as warm-up time comes to an end, and I ask, “Got what bad?”

“The Love Jones. You’re all caught up in that girl and it’s written all over your face.” My gloved hand reaches up as if I could touch the look he’s talking about. “It’s not a bad thing, Santos. Go with it.”

We jump over the boards, Coach Hammer gives us the kick their asses speech
